Miracle Man - Brian Tan

If there's a real life Superhero whom i personally know, the title should be Miracle Man. Donning the suit of Miracle Man would be Brian Tan.=)
6 Months / Half a year back, a great friend of mine, Brian was diagnosed with last stage of Pancreas Cancer (View my post back then: http://dennislaumusic.blogspot.com/2010/01/prayer-for-brian.html ) and upon hearing the news, i was utterly devastated and even shed a tear or two. The same expression and emotion struck me a couple of hours ago and words cant express the joy when i visited him to see this Extraordinary soul beats the odds and feeling all recovered, after having the cancer cells all frozen to a Negative 160 degrees and cured. Since that fateful day I knew, i have never one day not send a short scripture of the Bible verse (which i receive daily from facebook) to him because i believe Miracles could happen and God creates it!

Keeping myself up to date with Brian's daily, weekly and monthly progress and at the same time, remember him in my chat with the Big man up there every night was the only thing i could do and played a part in his healing and recovering process. To see him all back to his original "color", smiling, laughing and able to chat, share, envision and plan our long awaited and anticipated concert end year together made me realized even more how much friendship and relationship means to each and everyone of our lives. This concert is going to be the first and one of its kind to bring part of "DiversiFy" to LIVE, Incorporating the elements of the different genres Backed with an awesome Live Band and a 70 piece KL PAC Orchestra. This dream lived in us during the recording process of the album...awaiting to be realized.

Finally, Thank you God for his Awesomeness...Moreover, Thank you to each and everyone of you who has kept Brian in your prayers.

Reflection Born =)

Fresh from the Oven in Arkstudios, TTDI this afternoon at 3pm, "REFLECTION" was Conceived.=)
I had a truly remarkable and memorable experience having the best of the circle in working on this Live project intensively for 2 weeks in the studio and it does brings back memories and at the same time, creating refreshing ones as well. For each of you involved: Lewis, Jamie, Wilson, Shah, Nick, Jimmy, your every effort is very much appreciated.

I have not thought of HOW should I market Reflection because its something that came from the heart at That moment and into the keys of the Piano in my home studio sometime in late April, then into the IDEAS in my head and the late night sessions with my co producer, Shah Bass resulting into creating, learning, amalgamating and experiencing the different individual talents, vibe Felt in the recording studio. The Magic touches in Reflection are personally to me just Indescribable, Priceless to be said. To sum it up, it was Inspired by a person, and what i hope is for that Someone to feel the Sincerity in this song (You know you were the First to have it). Of course, in due time, the listeners & audience too.=)

Recording "Reflection" with Drum Legend, Lewis Pragasam

Recording the drums is probably one of my favorite part of the recording process, because not only is the Backbone of the song, you can say its very much different then the other instruments when it comes to recording it. The drums varies in the different venue / studio we are in because of the different acoustics, hence tuning it to get the Right TONE for the particular song is very much important and essential. So indeed, for this song "Reflection"..again we bring back International Drum Legend, Lewis Pragasam who recorded for DiversiFy on "MAHKOTA" & "Sudden Twist".

I personally think one of the most important component of the drum is the Snare which normally if you listen to any pop song, it comes in during the 2nd beat of the bar. and to have a solid Snare tone, it requires a little fussiness to go around it in which we all are. Today, for "Reflection", we used the "Cadesan" Signature Fibreglass Snare, which is the same snare Lewis recorded for Leehom's "Forever Love". What more it got that Solid Punch tone that i envisioned for this song.

Back to School ....Old School

Sometimes, we Reflect on our doings, our right / wrong doings, attitude, morality, career, relationship be it with friends or close ones, etc. There was recently a moment i experienced it myself. And i guess, the best way is to express it through the music i make. At this very point of my life, i have longed for sometime to do a live studio session with our very own sessionist greats since the last stage of post production for DiversiFy...therefore, i always believe, as a person very much involved in arts, hence the creativity of the mind, Its very difficult to keep it inside without releasing it. Sounds strange but i guess the ppl who are in this "line" would know what i mean.

Sorting the expertise of a great friend / bassist of mine, Shah..this afternoon, we embarked on the journey of co-producing and recording the Rhythm Section of "Reflection", a song i composed recently during this period of time. To be honest, this moment is kind of bitter sweet for me but i have learned to overcome it and at the same time, grow from it. and, recording in the studio is just a Blissful experience and the perfect medicine.

Instead of the style i am accustomed to in recording the first album, i want a totally different approach for "Reflection" without loosing the identity of myself. As some of you might know, im very much influenced by the style of John Mayer thus in time, you will be able to listen the "Mayerism" in me in this song. At the same time, i would want each and everyone of you to Feel the message i would like to deliver in this song in compatible with the title of it. I always belive making a song is exactly like making a movie. Likewise, in producing an album.

Anyway, Very much excited about it, because an All Star Band is always not to be missed without capturing any Pics & Videos.

Asia Uncut @ Shanghai- Behind the Scenes

First and foremost,Thank you to all who read my previous blogpost and keeping my dear friend, Brian Tan in your prayers. He has just undergone his first Chemo in Singapore and is staying strong in this battle. May God Bless him with the greatest love and strength of all!

Anyway, My First Shanghai Trip was a shoot for a Talkshow for Starworld's ASIA UNCUT. Aired every Sunday on ASTRO Channel 711 @ 10pm. Previously based in Singapore and this season in Shanghai, it was indeed a tremendous improvement compared to the first season. The revamped set, storyline and production does have a class of itself, similar to the ones on Saturday Night Live & David Letterman. and of course, no other great host, besides the One and Only Jon Niermann!

Touched down in Pudong Airport at 4pm and off I was to the set in the winter about 3 degrees Celsius.

A Prayer for Brian

In the New year, we look forward to many things....we set resolutions, we plan ahead for the year, we look forward in achieving new goals, and most of all..we want to be a better person. For myself, im actually quite contend with my resolutions last year in which i managed to fulfill all of it...the album, the music, the launch at last. This year, i plan to take the music or rather the album to another level. Because, i always believe....as human, we are greedy, just depends how much greed we have. To me, i take this greed as the urge to improve...because life is short, and we have to make the best of it.

I've got a new resolution this year, and it really tops the rest of it..that i ever had or wished before. Its for this friend of mine, Brian Tan...in fact, a very good friend of mine whom i respect and admire because for his dedication to his craft in Music, both teaching and performing. Brian plays the violin and piano superbly and I regard him as the pioneer of the electric violin in Malaysia. Besides, he conducts the KL Pac Simfonietta Orchestra in which frm the beginning he nurtured young and amateur aspiring musicians into becoming musicians who are able to achieve their dreams today. To sum it all up, he is one of the very few outstanding all rounder musician who is amazingly talented in his respective specialization.

Late last month, i received news frm a mutual friend of ours, Dominic that Brian's being diagnosed with Stage 4 Pancreatic Cancer. My heart sunk upon hearing it...and immediately i know there is no one i could turned to for help except God. cause, one thing for sure, the Lord has been very kind to me last year. He listens, and answers your prayers....and thats one thing for sure. Since then, Brian and I have been constantly in touch via sms and believe it or not, i do send him a daily bible verse every afternoon without fail till today....which i received these verses via an application on facebook daily. I take it as God's daily message to me....and probably God would wanna speak to him through me....well, thats how i think...but at least it comforts me.=)

Pancreatic cancer is a silent killer, it affects ppl i personally know, my dear uncle, Hollywood actor the late Patrick Swayze whom all have fell victim to this cancer. Is a "disease" in which by the time u have experienced the symptoms of it, its already at the later stage and chemotherapy would only be the only option. Because surgery normally (if found out later)would not be able to remove the tumour, blocking arteries and have already spread to other parts of the body. Brian's case was similar and it does hurt me deeply for waking up daily knowing that the options are little.

Brian is one of the most hardworking, energetic and inspiring musician / friend i have ever known. You can never see the tiredness in his eyes therefore i could understand the admiration and respect his students has for him. Even when i visited him yesterday evening at his place. His positive mindset and happy go lucky attitude in battling this cancer really left me speechless.. It made me think twice of the little obstacles we face everyday.. and sometimes, being frustrated easily because we cant get a simple thing done...But seeing Brian so strong and in return convince me that he will be strong and fight this through cause we still plan to work and perform together in my upcoming concert series and have many more late night suppers when he gets better, despite losing much weight due to the surgery.

I never regard my blog as a superbly commercial blog because as you can see frm my previous post, i only speak about my music...However this time, i would like to Urge each and everyone of you as readers of of my blog..., to just please Pray for this dear friend of mine, Brian, that he will fight and win this battle against Pancreas Cancer.

Yesterday morning in Church, a friend of mine, King Wai recommended me this blog who is about a lady who has stage 4 lung cancer and managed to survive till today. Thus, motivates me to further believe that all things are possible...and a miraculous miracle might happen very soon.=)

Brian said that after many years of hardwork, its time for him to take a Vacation, to treat this cancer. He says he treats this cancer as a friend and all he can do right now is to speak to his new found "friend" of him to go away as soon as possible. Its true and indeed very inspiring.

So dear readers and friends of my nimble fingers blog, once again I'm here asking you a favor to join the army and pls pray for Brian Tan for his speedy road to recovery, pray that the doctors in Singapore would try their very best and for the chemotherapy to destroy the cancer cells. You wouldn't know how much a little time of yours would help in giving him the encouragement and determination to win this battle! May God Bless you, Brian....and all of you too.=)

"Dennis Lau- DiversiFy" Press Launch@ Starhill Gallery, 12th November 2009

Thanks you Jo Teh, you are extraordinary.

A very good evening to all honourable guests, members of the Media and ladies and gentlemen. I would like to express my deepest appreciation and gratitude to everyone who is present here today. Thanks for taking the time out from your busy schedules to be apart of my momentous journey.
I’m extremely Nervous today, but i hope you all could open your hearts and listen, as I would like to to share with you a very short story......my story, mydream.
How many of you had a childhood full of musical notes? To me, I regard my childhood as one of a kind. Because I woke up having breakfast, lunch and dinner filled with Italian terms: Allegro, Crescendo, Diminuendo, so on and so forth. There was only one goal for me at that time and it was to pass my examinations and move on to the next grade. And then, came the much awaited uni years which was when I took up music. While most of my friends at that time were busy earning degrees in other fields, I realised that earning a degree in music would be the wisest choice for me as I could most definitely excel in that subject. Truth be told the years spent studying and learning was not all that smooth sailing, because something came to my mind then, it was the thought of how on earth did I end up here? Then the thought shifted to I better not waste my mum’s hard earned money !
Then, it was my performing years, where I was yet to find the passion in music. At that point of time, I thought what does it take to be different than others? The answer was simple, having your own original composition. Sounds simple, but for me it posed a major problem, because I did not have an idea on how to write songs, especially since I’m from a classical background, and we’re mainly trained to play music that dates back to the 17-18th century. Then it was almost as if lightning struck and I managed to compose a tune and decided on a whim to record it. The song is titled “ I just Wanna” and is included as one of the tracks in the album =)
I must say, the first recording sounded absolutely refreshing to my ears…because from a classical background, I had no idea how a drum, bass or any other instrument should and could sound apart from the piano and violin. Because of the birth of this excitement, I then embarked on this journey 2 years ago which eventually brought me here of having the privilege of speaking and performing for all the wonderful people present.
In the last 2 years, I feel blessed to be influenced by many wonderful ppl. Not only the number of musicians which influenced me in terms of music. I then learned how to collaborate and be influenced by different people. Frm Photographers (Thank you Zung of the photoz.com for being the official photographer & videographer), Fashion designers, interior designers, artists, business ppl, PR Agencies, Advertising agencies, etc and not only that, appreciate the different talents and skills of these wonderful ppl. Because of these ppl and friends, I had one goal, being a musician/ violinist myself, my goal was to project and allow people to take notice of the Diverseness of the violin. That’s why the album is titled DiversiFy. Throughout the period of this self funded production, I did not approach any labels or companies, because I truly want this album to be produced based on the experience I had gone through the past 2 years.
Thank you to Sony Music Entertainment my distributors for the album for believing in this product. I would like to once again, say Thank You to the Sony Music team: Adrian, Aziana, Tam & Yuen See for this. God Bless and I love you..

Released in major stores late October, DiversiFy is Dennis' collaboration with the finest talents in the Malaysian music scene,

It has been almost 2 years since i embarked on this journey cum album production (December 2007 to be exact), and to feel the actual "hard copy" in the hands is something just so surreal. Maybe its just me feeling this...but probably is because I was involved in every aspect of the production of this "product"..from the composing, arranging, recording, production, conceptualizing, direction, designing of it...but what can i say, if its something in which you do it out of pure passion and LURVE for it, these are the elements that strives you to achieve your dreams....plus, the result will be different, i believe.=)

Sasa Fragrance Awards Finals 2009

A month ago, I had the invitation to perform for the Sasa Fragrance Awards preliminary rounds judging in Midvalley Megamall and once again, with the gracious and kind invitation from Winnie of Sasa, I had the privileged to showcase 2 of my latest originals from my album- DiversiFy, collaborating with two of the most amazing artistes in the region: Jimmy Sax & Syafinaz Selamat. Thank you Once again, SASA

Yes, you heard that right, is Syafinaz Selamat. Earlier this year, both of us decided to work and recorded a song titled "MAHKOTA" for my album. Eventually, this song is not only going to be in My album, but also Syafinaz's upcoming album as well. So do expect to listen out for this. I composed the song and she wrote the lyrics with the purpose of being able to create the mood of aspirations and being inspired when you hear this. Therefore, it has been a long wait for us to Debut this song and finally, the opportunity came=)

Also, i experimented with "Sudden Twist" with only Jimmy. Having write the song with the idea of showcasing the ability of the violin to perform with the virtuosity of the Tenor Sax & Electric Guitar did somehow made way for having Just the Soprano Saxophone this time. I always believe Music is all about being spontaneous...not always, but of course with planning. But the "Magic" of it is sometimes only happen during a performance. Not during a recording session, a rehearsals, or practice. Because each session has its own moments!

Sri Lanka- Country of Hospitality

Never in my Wildest dream or imagination would i ever thought of being in Sri Lanka, what more to perform there. However, it all became a reality last weekend whereby me & Jimmy were invited to perform in a Thai Restaurant Launch by the beach in Colombo. It was absolutely a mind blowing experience, an eye opener, and of course we were treated with 1st class service from the Number One Tycoon in Sri Lanka- Mr. N.Vakeesan. It was a great pleasure and honored for the kind invitation to perform in a country filled with Hospitality & Smiles. This will be a Sweet memory which i would carry around and spread whenever the name Sri Lanka is brought up.=)

Ahhh....Finally, the Mosaic Team touched base in Colombo, Sri Lanka Airport@ 345am Local time...phew!!

Looking out into the sea, listening to the gush of waves, and feeling the breeze on your face just make you feels like...gosh, you hope that "someone" is feeling this too!=)

Heading back to the Hotel for Lunch with our Driver, Kamal....You know in Sri Lanka, all drivers Honk at the car in front every second...for example:" Beep Beep Beep(Ex-Cuse-Me)", then the car or vehicle in front would response with:"Beep Beep(Oh-Kay)"...and they would give way for the vehicle behind to pass..is like there's a conversation between the both drivers......If we Malaysians bloody Honk someone, you would expect a head sticking out along with a killer stare, or probably a third finger out of the window!

Understanding how the business works here in Colombo

After Lunch, we visited the site again, and well...it really looks like its nothing near to completion

Finally, "Sudden Twist" made its Debut in KlCC in collaboration with the Estee Lauder Model Search 2009 Finals which I have the privileged of performing. Thanks to Jean Loh of Estee Lauder for this wonderful invitation.
Performing alongside with my mates, Yuri & Jimmy, whom i have worked intensively with in this Album, was a great experience and the vibe of having 3 musicians on stage did simply add flavor & attitude as I expected and visioned when i first started composing this song. The concept indeed is to showcase the diversification of the Violin enabling it to blend with different instruments, at the same time showcasing the virtuosity of each instruments. In this case, the electric guitar & Tenor Sax. However, i believe in practice makes perfect and we do learned as a trio from each performance how to improve it from all aspects. Which I'm absolutely grateful for Yuri & Jimmy to join me on stage!=)

a Love put Together.....

Once upon a time, there was a "Track" which has been playing in my Heart for the past 6 months. Finally, I have decided to record it though at that moment, I thought i should have after i performed it for the first time. But I'm glad i did now...=)

The delay was due because of the growing in understanding towards this person. And from the understanding of this person, i grew as well as a person musically, and personally. Thank you.
Therefore, i have decided to take a different approach in the recording of this song and i feel and hope that the person listening to this would love it as much as i do.

In doing so, i have the honored to have guitarist Jamie Wilson and Bassist Shah, not to forget my mate/ producer Yuri Wong coming on board@ Alex's Starmount Studio to help put together this piece of art.

Michael Jackson 1958 - 2009

As early as 7am on a friday morning, I got one of the Most shocking news in the mist of a rehearsal for a show via sms stating: "Your Idol, Michael Jackson is dead"........then within the next 2 mins, another sms came in:"Your idol, Michael Jackson passed away in UCLA?"
A sudden gush of anxiety, confusion and questions boggled in mind instantly..Why? How? When? What?....The King of Pop is dead? thats like a forever thing which we couldnt turn back time to perform next month in London. That would probably be the Biggest comebacks of the century. I remember when i was young, a little kid perhaps, during the time i was still attending my piano and violin classes and practicing the instruments, i had a vague memory of watching his concerts on TV from time to time. Recalling his "hee hee" pitch, "OW...", crotch grabbing antics, and oh, how can one forget his signature dance moves especially the Moonwalk? both back ways and side ways. So in short, i practically grew up on his music..

Slowly, as i reach maturity in writing my own songs, composing and arranging it, besides performing it, i learned the passion of understanding Michael's music. He to me, is probably the one who redefined/ reinvented pop music. Back in the 70s & 80s, the pop music u have or listened to are the bee gees, the carpenters, New kids on the block...but Michael took it to a whole different level and infused it with RnB/ Hip hop vibes and flavours. If one listens attentively to Dirty Diana or Man in the Mirror, you would get what i mean by the groove of it. Not to mentioned his famous bass line for Billie Jean which still remains one of the clubs favorite. That inspired me to compose music and arrange it in a way that it would still be on the air waves 20 years from now..or rather it would still sound as new as before. Michael's influenced me not only to create new sounds, but also in the aspects of showmanship.

Performing is not only about going on stage, and showcasing your music...but is also about delivering the message..and Michael obviously execute it in a remarkable and sensational way. which made him an undeniably perfect performer both on the vocals and the dance at the same time. This has set the benchmark and influence modern day artistes like Usher, Rain, Chris Brown, Neyo & Justin Timberlake which emulated his "popping" dance style and moonwalk. For example, Justin Timberlake did the beatboxing thing in his "Rock Your Body" video..and the dance style is very much apparently in his concerts as well.

Apart from the media which in recent years focus more on his appearance and personal life more then his music, I personally feel that was a huge stress on him and led to his downfall. Yes, he may have changed his appearance, presentation in the public. But why the focus? There are many other freaky looking artistes, celebrities around with tattoos, piercings, drugs related cases. For example, Ozzy Osbourne, Kid Rock but why the media scrutiny? I sympathized on his upcoming Concert Tour that did not materialized which was a really unfortunate thing as I personally do follow his videos from time to time. From his interview with Oprah, his beat boxing, dance moves, in the studios with Will I.AM of the Black eye peas, rehearsals, etc...all on youtube.

Michael Jackson, is one of the most recognized figure on the planet and his Legacy as the Greatest Entertainer would last a life time in the heart of millions. Thank you for the music u have create, produced, performed and of course the impact you had in my life, musically. I will continue to be inspired by you and your music.

"Sudden Twist"- The Making 3@ The Factory- Horns & Guitars

Had an amazingly productive day in The Factory Music studios today. Laid down the Horns section with trumpeter,Eddie Wen and well, nothing sounds better then Real Brass=)As each session goes by, i cant wait to perform and showcase this song soon because this is the first time, I'm recording a song in The Factory LIVE with no use of Midi instruments. In the process of recording the Brass, we did layering which is basically a process of having the same instruments to play different parts, harmony and then putting them together sounding like one.

My mate, Yuri too lay down his solos and rhythm with his electric guitar providing "Sudden Twist" a fuller sounding.
2 more sessions to go and we are all ready to Rock!=)

DiversiFy, the album has indeed took a "Sudden Twist" in its recording process frm recording within its own capabilities to new technical expects. Introducing a new Studio located in the suburbs of Kuala Lumpur- StarMount Studio.=)
Founded by a new friend of mine, Alex Tan introduced by my mate, Yuri Wong. He was indeed a very nice person to work with and i highly recommend this studio to anyone who would like to have a good piece of recording done, equipped with amazing sound and recording engineering technologies. It's also Yuri's first experience and I must say, we did enjoyed every process of it.

As you can see frm my last post, the last time round, i recorded the keyboard to the song with the bass and drums. That process was just a guide to the latter instruments as because today, the focus was recording with this all new Yamaha Grand C1 with MIDI Functions which I myself have heard so much about it. Indeed, the feel of it was different as its an all new Grand. The touch was amazing and i must say, the reverb and sustain pedal of it really captures the essence of the Rubato part of the recording.=)

Now after laying all the basic instruments of the recording, or in other words, the "Frame". We would head back to the studio to work and lay down the guitar, horns, sax and violin parts. So much work to be done, but I'm looking forward to updating you guys more about it alright.*winks*

"Sudden Twist"- The Making 1

"INSPIRED" by someone who shares the same passion, "Sudden Twist" finally kicked off in Full Throttle in The Factory Music Studios. This time with a live band setting, with drummer Lewis Pragasam, Bassist Ken Chung & myself on keys. However, the "twist" is that Lewis let it all loose on an all new Roland's Electronic Drumkit.

The recording was a success, with all of us including engineer/ producer Yuri Wong getting the vibe and feel of the song better as the rehearsals cum recording sessions pass. And I'm glad Lewis did got used to the kit which just arrived last Friday. and He was the first to lay the groove down. Each Kick, Snare, Toms, Cymbals very much resembles an original acoustic kit and it will be great fun experimenting with Live Style of playing with Electric Beats later in the stage of production. "Sudden Twist" is based on a concept of which It would be included in the album as well after some considerations and dilemma. I thought why not let the violin shows its prowess and versatility and the ability to blend in with a funky live setting with solos from each instruments- Sax, Violin, Electric Guitar and the Drums. You will get what i mean when this project's done, in time. Also, the ideology and music arrangements of the song would have the influence of Babyface and KC & Jojo.*winks*

I laid down the keys this morning as a guide before heading towards another Studio on Thursday to record the Grand. A good one i believe after much recommendation frm my mate, Yuri. and similarly, i pray the session then would be a good one..or better!=)

June's "Sudden Twist"

I have been in a dilemma for the past 2 weeks since finishing production and mixing of "DiversiFy". Recording this album has been an experience for me, both professionally and personally. Professionally as in throughout this journey, i have been able to work with outstanding musicians around and meet different ppl who appreciates and criticize the music i make. Personally in the sense of been inspired and influenced with the daily routines and experiences in life.

Though the road of recording is somewhat done, there's something i feel which is still missing in this entire album. Excluding the packaging, photoshoots and content..is the "Ingredient" which i feel somehow has Not shown what its suppose to..The message is Not there yet. And i feel this should Not happen if i decide to do something which is my Passion. I have put in a 101% effort and to go the extra mile of making something which I would be proud of, I would do whatever it takes to make it happen. The road ahead is long ahead, is just the beginning for now, therefore in the month of June, there would be a "Sudden Twist" in the road planned or rather the time scheduled..=)

Final Mixes Finito!

Bigger Screen, Clearer Results!=)

I'm feeling much relieved finally as my mixes for the album is complete but yet thinking alot on how to get the message across. I believe an album is like a ticket. A ticket NOT to stardom but a ticket which would allow ppl to understand me and my music better. And that's the whole purpose of the album, to open up your ears and to reach out to you with my musical expressions. Was in the studio earlier this week with Nick@ The Ark Studios to have one final hearing of the album before the mastering takes place and i have got to say, im pretty impressed with the overall mixes of the sound i wanna get. However, though everything is done, I'm still in search of that something lacking in the songs i have recorded. Probably the order of it which i regarded as the storytelling behind it all. An Album is also like my Autobiography in which in this case, i "pen" it myself....

Wish me luck, Let the Unsearchable "search" Me!=)

Pre Photoshoot Prep- Day 1

I'm in the mist of preparing for DiversiFy's Cover shot and have challenged myself to get a lil ripped and fit for it. Therefore, besides eating right and sleeping right, the most important thing is I gotta Train right....All in 2 weeks!
Its because i would want a "DiversiFy" look for the cover and to achieve that, this would require some gym prep in the process.
So along with Manager Steph, we decided to hit the gym first thing in the morning.
Today, we focus on the major muscle part like the Chest and Biceps....and i have to say Steph did a great job despite her first time doing weights.=)

DiversiFy- Post Production Begins

Finally, Post Production of the album- DiversiFy Begins! As excited as i am to get the final Product or CD out, post production plays an extremely role in this entire process. Imagine, having a note mixed wrongly, softer/ louder/ sharper/ slower/ etc then it should be, that mistake would be on the shelf of a listener for the next 10 years.... Therefore, confining myself in the studio and listening to a song mixed 10 times with different volume setting is also part and parcel as the producer of this album. This is also the time where i find my ears are most active and sensitive.

As some of you may know, i had my album in various studios. The 2 main studios and engineers that i actively worked with is Nick Lee of The Arkstudios & my mate, Yuri Wong of The Factory. The Mastering of the album would be done in Nick's place while Yuri mixed the tracks which we have recorded in The Factory.

This post production, mixing process is estimated to be done in 2 weeks time, then i will update more about the cover designs, etc...and of course the launch of DiversiFy=)

Recording of "You Gotta Know" feat. Liang

I have always love working with new ppl, especially new sounds, tone, voices that i come across and admired, and in some ways influence my music. Liang is one of them...probably Malaysia's only English speaking chinese RnB singer of its kind.. and with a unique voice he has, it was a blessing to have his inclusion on the album- DiversiFy.

"You Gotta Know" was the first song I worked with Yuri, who is a great producer friend of mine whom u can see him in my previous post of the production of my album....and it has been almost half a year since. We have been making music without fail almost every week, this is what i call sheer dedication to music and i absolutely admire the fact that we can both come together each week..be it, right after a project to discuss and plan for our next song. Since then, we have both complete a couple of tracks, rehearsed for shows, toured to Singapore, attended events, etc and of cos in the year 2009, we intend to bring "Our" music to a whole new level, a whole new horizon....

To me, each song written has its concept, i believe one need a story to project what's on your mind to your listeners. Just like a director or an author who wants to reach out their work to their audiences and readers. The trick lies in the ensemble of it. In music, we call it music arrangement. So, "You Gotta Know" was initially written for both Yuri & Me, like a Guitar & Violin Duet together with some accappela voices to go along. I called this genre "Acoustic Hip Hop" because besides the elements above, we do have some Hip Hop beats to go along. Therefore, after listening for sometime, both of us mutually agree to have a pure RnB Singer- Liang to add his flavour into this piece.

Honestly, I would need sometime to get used to the final mix of the song, but no doubt its good. With the added flavor and element, it surely depicts the true colors of "DiversiFy", the album.

However, more is Not necessarily good, right?=)

Health & Beauty Mother's Day Shoot

An interesting and refreshing morning indeed to spend the morning doing my first ever shoot with my Mum..Of course it would be her first as well so i guess she's as excited as i am!=)
Thank you to Selina the PR Goddess for her kind recommendations to Health & Beauty Magazine and its indeed a privileged to be a part of this especially for the Mother's Day issue in May 2009. *cant wait to see it!*
As a musician myself, my mother was the pillar of strength who pushed me through the hardship of life when i was younger..these includes the hours of practicing, the yearly exams, the every morning exercise of Italian Terms which is extremely essential for classical musicians, the patience and tolerance of dealing with a notorious kid like me, and most of all..the unconditional love of believing in me..=)
So before her shoot, we wanna make sure she looks all good...Jane got her a nice dress and jacket to don on, Manager Steph helped with the make up and make sure she says the right word and of course me who bring her there on time, Elyna for the Venue sponsorship: Bangkok Jazz, Chulan Square, KL.

Perfect Timing! Guess who's here?
Presenting the One and Only, Voice of the Century- Kewei all the way frm Singapore...
DiversiFy has certainly incorporated some cool Diversified/ Singaporean elements in it now!=)
together with Yuri, Rio(Yuri's intern) & Kewei, i finally completed recording the long awaited song.....if you're not feeling it, well I am! and after 3 months of tracking, planning, and producing...However, the work doesnt stop now as right this moment, I gotta plan how's this song gonna be performed/ executed and sound live!

Kewei landed some backing vocals on this track and i did my part too cleaning up some of the parts too. Thanks Kewei, you know i miss performing with ya and we definitely need to come out with something soon enough alright, just let me know and i will be there!=) ..She's here this week to perform for the AMEI concert tmr and as a dear music friend of mine, i wish her All the Best in her album which she's currently working on as well. So be on the look out for it alright..=)

Have always love performing in Penang, especially outdoor events there for me were pretty memorable example the Penang Jazz Festival 2006 & 2007...looking forward to this year's but finger crossed=)
Anyway, Was in Autocity Penang over the weekend to perform for St. Patrick Day by Guinness Stout and well, i was pretty impressed by the professionalism of the sound equipments and crew. Not to mentioned the dancers who coordinate well with my songs especially An Introduction to The Experience. DiversiFy- Day 4 (Vocals Part 1)

Vocals is definitely Not what i'm made for but playing the violin is like expressing my voice through it and it makes me happy no doubt.
However, for this track- DiversiFy, its gonna be Full of Diversification elements, Hip Hop, Old School Funk, Strings arrangements, Jazz, Vocals and of course my violin in it...imagine it, but no Sneak Preview till the launch....i hope!
Thats if im able to keep my excitement till then....haha
Anyway, recording session with my mate, Yuri Wong went well as planned and we recorded the first verse..experimenting on different effects and sounds striving to make this DiversiFy really/ extremely DiversiFied!=)

MAHKOTA- Final Mix

Finally, my anticipated song with Syafinaz is finally mixed=)
and today, i would like to share with ya the final process of it, which is the mixing process of a song...this is the part which we call Post Production. And having most of my Live tracks recorded here in The Arkstudios, i had award winning mixing and mastering engineer, Nick Lee to lend his magic to this particular track which im quite proud of after Prelude in F minor titled- MAHKOTA composed, arranged and produced by myself feat. Syafinaz Selamat.

As you can see, The Arkstudios has just finished renovation downstairs and is equip with the state of the art mixing and mastering equipments. The Mixing stage comprises of balancing the sound of the different instruments, vocals, drums, etc..editing the tone, intonation, adding reverbs, making it listening friendly. Being more of a live musician myself, I definitely need to switch my ears to a different channel while listening and going through the mix..but is a process which i do enjoy the most as well!

A heads up, im currently into the post production of my album. That means more listening, and is a process which i preferred to be by myself reminiscing and reflecting back the whole recording process again since Dec 2007 and at the same time, move forward at a pace where the ultimate goal is still the Launch middle of this year=)

Recording the Strings today was a Blast and a Challenge at da same time. It feels so good to come together with Yuri again brain storming, experimenting with New Sound on this track- DiversiFy being the theme song of the album means we gotta create a sound which would "elevate" the whole identity of the album.

I would love to show ya guys the video of this recording session but i guess it would be best to keep the secret of its sound for the Launch later.*winks*

Status: 60 % into Completion=)

Anyway, here i would like to share with ya a video of an inspirational song i composed when i was Inspired and hoping to Inspire others as well titled- "MAHKOTA"

DiversiFy- 2nd Day of Recording

Today's the second day of my recording on the last song-"DiversiFy" for my album@ The Factory Music Studios with mah bro, Yuri Wong. Probably the trickiest of songs to complete but at the same time fun and challenges are always a good thing in enabling yourself to Explore out of the box!=)

I thought it would be very much better having an Electric Bass to add to the groove of the song in the chorus section whereby the main influence would be the Jamiroquai kinda lines. And at the same time, give the song an edgier feel to it. So, i call upon my Bass bro, Shah who just got back frm Dubai frm a 3 month stint. It's a true blessing to have him here providing his expertise and touch to the main song of the album=) Shah and I have previously worked alot so we both are familiar with each other style and expectations.

The reason why this song would be a challenge is because first, its the main song of the album- DiversiFy therefore it gotta be the one that ppl would listen out for and it has to be radio friendly. Second, it tempo of the Verse and Chorus section varies therefore it has to be produced in a way its acceptable to the ears and of course playable. Third, Its more complicated in a way the blend of both Live and Synthesis instruments needs to sound as original as possible to avoid a Bias sounding of either side. Fourth, the lyrics of the song need to sound as Out Of The Box as possible minus the vocals of it which i myself would need to work extensively on that!=)...These are the four main reasons for now putting aside some minor considerations of course.

Once again, back in the studios again, doing what i love most- recording=)
Anyway, to update y'all a lil, im working on my last song before the entire Post Production take place(mixing and mastering) of the album titled- DiversiFy. I would say this song would comprise almost every aspect and element of the whole album as i was thinking recently, i need a song which could project the "Theme" of the album very much....

and thinking about that, one thing lead to another and wallah, we have a brand new track yet again! I realized i mentioned "MAHKOTA" would be my last track in my earlier post but the itch of writing and experimenting new material just cant be help!=)

Here's the Debut of the song Me & Yuri Wong have been working on for the past 2 months since our last gig@ Bangkok Jazz in Nov 2008. Right here, we incorporate this new genre which i would like to introduce- "Acoustic Hip Hop". As you can see, this time i have the privileged to introduce a good bro and fellow musician, MAJESTIK (All the way frm South Africa) also featured in my upcoming album.=)

The Genre "Acoustic Hip Hop", simply means incorporating acoustic instruments: Violin & Guitar with Hip Hop beats & Rap PLUS highlighting the different elements in this particular song or "Story" i would like to tell is in fact a very different introductory and an eye opener. Therefore, "Cooking Up A Storm" is borned!

Its just Indescribable!
The feeling of ecstasy cant be put to words as im writing this review of the Bangkok Jazz's show last weekend. Its not only a show with the honor of having such wonderful friends, supporters, colleagues, Musicians together as one not to forget but also a show filled with Pure Musicality in the air=)
Never in my entire life as a musician i feel so complete and perfect despite just a mini showcase in Bangkok Jazz that it would strive, motivate, encourage me more to create better music and achieve my goals.
Thanks to Syed, Steph, Selina, Jane, Xandria, Paul, Don, Aina, John, etc for being there to make everything possible. I would also like to thank the musicians personally for playing their very best: Jimmy, Billy, Sudin, Ken Chung, Yuri, Majestik, E Jeng, Edwin. You guys make every note splendid and perfect...not only that, the vibe and aura each of you created and possessed is magic in the air. Looking back at the videos which i just received frm PA Steph, it was indeed a night to remember.
I hope all who were presence the 2 nights were Diversified!=)

At last, the whole "DiversiFy" Album has began to take into shape with the touch of REAL PIXEL Studios by photographer maestro CY Wong.
It was a 7 hour shoot straight and the results is just very much worth every second of the click of the camera. Thank you to all who made the effort for this one of a kind experience photoshoot. Its probably the first ever photoshoot which is so relevant with my music and feel, and i feel so at home. I always believe that a photograph could tell a million words, same goes to a song...it has different interpretation depending on who is experiencing it.=)

I was in a talk today in the Annual Youth Convention@ PWTC earlier this evening (Thanks to Joanne, Melissa & Joel for the invitation) and was very much driven by the topics of inspiring youths, dreams, passion, etc.
Sharing the stage with, is my buddy Yuri Wong, Azura, Sarah Lian, etc and we did had a good time sharing with the audience, ppl our thoughts about the industry especially the entertainment industry. and as for me, it would be more of my musical journey where you get to read about it if you have been following my blog=)

Being a musician is not all about just being an entertainer on stage, but also purely driven by passion. I believe that in whatever you do be it, being a chef, musician, actor, lawyer, doctor, marketing person, you gotta have passion to take you far. Passion is not a thing which you can see, hold, grip but however is a combination of mental strength, happiness, the ability to LEARN & look forward, optimism, positive thinking, and of cos sheer guts. These combination of elements however do not determine your success but if you combine this with your Determination to achieve it, nothing is impossible=)
Thats a motto i always believe in and am still pursuing it....

Despite having passion & determination in pursue of your goals, Staying Focus on the right track is also important. Because we as humans, are influenced by the daily routine we do from the ppl u meet, the criticisms that hit you, the advice of ppl around. However, you as the creator/ founder/ product must never give up hope on the dream you wanna achieve.

If you do something with pure passion, the results would be much rewarding then you do something because you have to.

Finally, i got the chance to work with my bro, Zung frm thephotoz.com in this exclusive album photoshoot. =)
Zung's concept this time would be his highly acclaimed "Mood" shots or "MOMENT" shots which i have great admiration towards it. Anyway, being a photography enthusiasts, i have always love Zung's style and his expressions when it comes to the lens of his camera.. The angle, focus of the lens is just beyond words..=)

The Blessings to me this year is beyond words and i would like to say a very very big Thank you to all my fellow friends, business partners, musicians whom has made this year such a memorable yet productive one for me.=)

Mahkota- The Making 2

Once again, back in the studios to complete MAHKOTA, the lead violin part..=)
And since it's a public holiday for Selangor, i seize the opportunity to get it done quickly. Main reason is i would like to send the file over to my arranger/ violinist friend, Peng Fei in Shanghai to record the orchestra over the weekend and to hopefully record in GuangZhou, as the cost there would be much better.
So well, this time with a "click" track, Peng Fei's job gonna be so much easier right?

Peng Fei's a very good friend of mine and is also a fellow jazz violinist/ arranger/ Composer like me based in Shanghai, China.
Probably one of the best musician i know around the globe!
Here's WHY & a little biodata about him being the maestro himself!

Violinist and Composer Peng Fei has been selected to compose music for the official celebrations at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China.

Peng Fei graduated 3 times with highest distinction from Shanghai Conservatory of Music on classic violin performance (2000), the Royal Brussels Music Conservatory majored in jazz performance and composition (2002) and the Royal Conservatory of THE HAGUE where he studied with saxophonist John Ruocco (2003). Peng Fei composes music for international brand advertising, TV commercials, documentaries, TV dramas and movies.

He has appeared worldwide as a performer and music director: the 2002 German Castal Jazz Festival; 2003 Macau International Jazz Festival with jazz great Eugene Pao special performance; 2005 Singapore Art Of Chinese Festival, 2005 Hong Kong International art festival-All that shanghai jazz, 2005 Hong Kong International Jazz Festival-Coco Zhao/Peng Fei special performance; 2006 Malaysian Miri international Jazz Festival-All that shanghai jazz, 2006 Canadian Montreal International Jazz Festival- Possicobilities Band special performance.

Dear Peeps,

Back in the studios again,,this time with a whole new and elevated synergy, aura and determination to finish the last song of my album.. Previously recorded as "Track 9" then "Gemilang 2"...now,,ahem....MAHKOTA.
As an introduction, Mahkota in Bahasa Malaysia means Crown and i wanna compose a song to inspire ppl as much as im inspired and influenced by the different ppl i meet each day, frm my close friends, working colleagues, musicians, artistes, and maybe you as well...and Mahkota is conceptualized/ composed/ arranged/ written to signify one's capability to Not give up, be strong, follow your passion & determination, to be at the top of your game therefore to deliver your best!
Of course, being the composer and arranger of this song, im indeed very humbly honored to do a collaboration with Malaysia's NO.1 Soprano: Syafinaz Selamat. Thank you very much to lend your voice and lyrcis in this song and im sure, with this whole concept of vocals and violin duet, we could take this song further.=)

Several friends has asked me:" are ya doing it in Malay or English?"..i say:" It would be in Bahasa." and the next question i would get is:" why? if you would like to market it internationally, mass etc?"
Well, as a Malaysian ultimately, I believe that we must be proud of our country and depict that we as Malaysian could do something different as well in terms of musically, showmanship and concept, in our OWN LANguage! Therefore, Bahasa Malaysia as our national language is the best to reach out.
To be honest, its been quite a while since i come upon and realize how beautiful our own national language is....Brilliant Sya!=)

Photography is probably my 2nd passion after music..though not being a pro or photographer myself, i do very much appreciate good form of photography.=)
This morning, i began my first photoshoot for my music album with a good friend of mine and probably the best wedding photographer in the region, Jim Liaw frm www.jimliaw.com . We have decided on a more graffiti background infused with a more rugged look which would be in contrast with the other 2 shoots scheduled soon by another 2 top photographers=)

Dear peeps, below is a new song composed by myself intended for Vocals and Violin duet.
In a week's time, you would know who's the singer. However, composing a song is also about practicality and well, "Dream" could be also performed with a violin and saxophone duet...

Say a little Prayer~

My Sincere prayers goes to my Soul Brother, Jimmy Sax...who had an accident on tuesday night.
I was shock and utterly lost in words when i got a call frm Jimmy's wife saying that he had an accident along the way back frm a show we performed earlier.
Even in awe is that he could pick up the bike he was riding and still drive to the Sungai Buloh Hospital with 4 broken ribs...

Without a doubt, he is a true musicians and a dear friend, whom i will cherish for the rest of my life.
Love ya bro..
and pls get well soon=)
Dont worry about our show, we will get up and make the best of it when you are better alright though i could feel a lil handicap now...=(

A Cut Above Artistic Shoot- 24th November 2008

Its been such a productive weekend with the shows (Thank God) and as monday comes, its all a brand new week again!=)
As scheduled, i had the opportunity to be invited by Master Hair guru herself, no other then the talented Winnie Loo herself to be part of her artistic shots pictorial today..
Location was in the VIP Room, A Cut Above, Pavilion=)

As you may know, as an art enthusiastic, i love photography apart frm wedding photographs. As fashion/ studio shots is a totally different ball game then the moment shots which i normally come across, here below are some of the pics UNRELEASED yet=)
I must say Adam, though someone i have never worked with him before and this the first time, his photos really captivates my senses and is someone with a good eye=)
